The Indian Financial System Code (IFSC) is maintained by the Reserve Bank of India and uniquely identifies bank branches which participate in the two main payment and settlement systems in India : Real Time Gross Settlement(RTGS) and National Electronic Fund Transfer(NEFT).
The IFSC is a 11 character alphanumeric code with the first 4 characters representing the bank name and the last 6 characters representing the bank branch. The 5th character is a zero('0') and is reserved for future use.
